Kitchen Makeover - $30 Backsplash

This is Part 2 of the 70s Weekender Makeover, posted in November (here).   I wasn't going to do this post yet... because I still haven't replaced all the lighting and plugs!  I'll have to do another post to show what a big difference lighting can make.

This is the before.

Another AFTER.  Please note, there are no decorating skills.  LOL! Just function.  We replaced the flooring throughout with engineered hardwoods.  Those and the granite were the 'big bang' elements.  You can find discounted prices, when they have only one slab of a particular section of granite (and you can fit your pieces from it as we were able to do).

Now, for the $30 backsplash.

After looking at tons of different tile possibilities (I was hankering for glass subway or marble), I realized that any of the patterns took away from the granite.

I fell back to a very cost effective solution I have used in my Old Girls.  You can buy this beadboard for $11.88 at Lowe's.  I needed two packages, some screen mold, $6.08, and some liquid nails.

You can see all the tile considerations... LOL.

I have a friend next door with a table saw, which makes cutting these pieces a snap.

You could use a jigsaw for all the cuts.  Remember to measure twice, cut once!!  And, be careful.

Once the pieces are all cut, use a caulk gun and the liquid nails to secure them to the wall.  Use finishing nails to place the screen mold (not pictured here), caulk the seams and paint.  There you go.  A beadboard backsplash for (in this case) $30.

I have been standing on the edge of the diving board trying my very best to dive in regarding my cabinets and backsplash. I have always loved the look of this because it's so farm housey. I'm pinning this!

And I got so busy copycat pinning that I forgot to say that I think the whole kitchen is just beautiful.

I love the beadboard backsplash. So cute! I have never had it in the kitchen only in the powder room. However, I really love it in the kitchen. Nice project and very inexpensive, that is what is wonderful about project.

I have not seen those packs of beadboard. We installed a beadboard backsplash when we built our daughter's house. They will replace it with tile when they can afford, too.

It looks fabulous Tanna and just perfect for blending in with the rest of the kitchen while letting the granite shine! Great job and thanks for sharing pics of the work you've done...it's always good to be inspired and get some new ideas.

It looks beautiful, Tanna. It mellows out the busyness of the counter top. Very nice.

Great back splash! I am always amazed by what paint can do (especially white paint!).

Oh my goodness. I cannot get over the before and after. I have wanted a beadboard backsplash for so long...if I ever get to replace my countertop that's what I'm doing. Excellent choice in my opinion. You are quite the handy girl too aren't you? I'm not sure I could tackle a project like this myself. I am just way impressed with everything!

What a charming kitchen. Would love to sit in one of those tall bar stools and visit. I would ask you to pray for our from Tom from Tyler who has a stoke last week, and is still not out of the woods. He will not be able to go back to his apartment in Tyler, two story, but will most likely be in a rehab for a while and may have to move closer to family for further assistance. He is a very independent man, please say prayers for his recovery. He does love the Lord, and growing in his faith.
Thanks Tanna...
Sending love
Wanda

Love, love it, Tanna! And good for you to do it yourself, it sounds like. I don't even know what liquid nails are. I just love beadboard I will be sending this to a friend who is deciding what to do on her backplash after granite has been installed. You can't get it any clearer than you have here. Thanks for sharing. It all look so wonderful but I'm sure when you change the lighting it will be even better!

What a huge difference and improvement and that wainscot paneling worked wonderfully.

I love the look of bead board. Do you think you can have too much because every time I turn around I am telling my husband we could put breadboard 'there' and there and there and there....
At any rate it looks perfect as a back splash! Good work.

So very pretty....the white is beautiful!!! Your talents are unending!

Amanda - I am sure Noni would vote for messy with you all there as opposed to clean and empty!!

That is a wonderful alternative to tile. I like how it compliments your kitchen without being too busy. Tile can sometimes do that (as you mentioned).

My son just splattered chocolate all over my stucco'd back splash. (be watching for that recipe...)
This might just be the ticket!

I LOVE it! I sure wish I had your talent and patience to do those kinds of home improvement projects. But, I know my strengths and measuring, cutting, etc. aren't included in the list, haha! The outcome is fabulous! I just LOVE your weekender!!!

Such a beautiful transformation. I love a bright, white kitchen. The backsplash is brillant. You have a great eye and that little detail was just perfect. Any tips on finding a great deal on granite? Thanks!

Pondside said...

I like your white kitchen - great transformation. Bead board is a longtime favorite of mine - use it on the ceiling of our last kitchen. We don't have a back splash in our kitchen - it was always one of those things we were going to get to. If The Great Dane likes your solution I may just have a back splash at last.

Your kitchen looks wonderful! I have almost the same color granite, and we used the same exact bead-board. I am about to paint my cabinetry because it is soooo dark, and we are putting down wood floors. What paint (sheen) did you use on your cabinets? I like the level of shine on them.

Tammy@T's Daily Treasures said...

The makeover looks great. White cabinetry really lightens things up and I love the look of beadboard. Great work! Best wishes, Tammy

Sensational Make-over Miss Tanna! I Haven't Visited In A While And Today I Just Couldn't Get Thoughts Of You Out Of My Mind. Now I Know Why...This Remodel Solution Is Precisely What I've Been Looking For. I'm In The Middle Of Updating A Thrownroom Here In My Neck Of The Woods And I'm Wondering If I Could Use Beadboarding on The lower Portions Of The Walls. I've Looked At Larger Size Beadboard panels And Know They'll Work For The Larger Scale Wall Space But I Needed Something To Place Around The Lower Section Of The Tub Surround. This Solution Is Perfect. And On The Reasonably Priced Side Too. THANK YOU for Sharing This Entire Process With Us. Love&SouthernSunshine, Terri

Dear Tanna, It is so nice to freshen things up though. The granite is just beautiful. The back-splash is just perfect. It goes perfectly with everything. It also lends a nice warmth.
I wish you many beautiful memories in your kitchen, the heart of the home. Blessings my dear, Catherine xo

I love the white. I've redone a kitchen once and I changed it from "wood" to all black and white. It was one of my favorite kitchens.

Genius! I need a backsplash too since the previous house owners didn't put anything in and having just paint in it's place is not cutting it for me. Don't know how people live without a backsplash as I am doing. Ugh.
