Best photography class ever! This past two weekends, I took a Basic Digital Photography class from Hounds of Light in Tyler.
These photos were all shot in the field exercise session after the classroom presentations.
I am a bit hesitant about sharing these photos as examples of the class. These guys are wicked smart about photography and able to covey it in a way that is extremely understandable for the novice. And, though I get it, I still need to practice it to get better. ;)
The Manual setting on my camera was like some kind of hoodoo voodoo until the light came on regarding how changing the aperture, the shutter speed and the ISO can so dramatically change a shot...
Blurred water... using a slow shutter speed and stopped down aperture. ISO constant at 100.
Same spot using a faster shutter speed... and opened up aperture.
Fast shutter... open aperture... If I had been willing to raise the ISO, I could have gotten even more "freeze the moment" kind of a shot.
Slow shutter... stopped down aperture. These are all hand-held shots... so, not the best quality, but a great lesson on how it all works.
Bottom line is this: If you are close enough to Tyler and are interested in understanding your camera, this is an excellent class. They will be offering it again in the fall. You can get on their mailing list from their blog (they don't post often, but there are some great exercises available there).

Now, if the sun would just come out! ha!

oh, good for you!! :)
Great pictures! I love playing with my camera too.
Lovely shots, Tanna. I had some photography classes back in SC but have not since moving. I just bought a new lens so trying that out now. Have a lovely week.
It looks and sounds as though you had a great time! Your pictures are always lovely, but these ones of the water especially are fantastic!! Glad you had fun! xx
I am in admiration that you operated your camera manually! One day, I'm going to do the same. First, I have to find a support group for photographers (and I use that term lightly) who are wanting to go manual but don't have the courage!!
Great shots!
Best,
Bonnie
I have a nice Canon that has all sorts of settings and I don't know how to use any of them. I'm just happy it has a good zoom for capturing birdies up close and personal. :) Glad you had fun with the class and learned a few things. Best wishes, Tammy
Oh good for you!
I have been tempted to take a clas..where I would know NO ONE:)
I have tried manual..and for some reason I work better in A mode P mode.. etc..
I have no idea why my brain cannot wrap itself around shutter speeds ..aperture..etc..
I love playing w/ exposure,and I do have 2 lenses that are manual..but I simply fiddle w/ the lens..
I should I should do what you did.
Great shots if you ask me:)
Kudos Tanna.
Fascinating post and photos, Tanna!
Congratulations Tanna - you got it! These are lovely shots and I've always thought your photos were great. You have a terrific eye and now that you have more control - I am sure they will all be amazing! Good for you!
Beautiful...now that makes me want to learn what I am doing with my camera, instead of just point and shoot.
Your photos are fantastic!! Way to go!!
Those photos look awesome! I am looking forward to seeing more. :)
Really wonderful photos . . .
I need a class, first I need a great camera.
Until that happens, I will appreciate you . . .
That course certainly paid off as these are great shot.
Your photos are incredible my friend. Love that you have learned so much. I need to take a course because mine stink and frankly it seems you were speaking a foreign language.
Hugs,
Meredith
Tanna, that had to have been so much fun taking that class! You've inspired me. Your photographs are just amazing!

oh wow....I need to check them out, however, I would be embarrassed as to how LITTLE I know about using a camera. Great shots.....and I like how you showed the difference in the water pics. Awesome! Can't wait to see your upcoming photos...
Blessings..

Good for you Tanna, enriching the mind and soul. So important as we get older. You did terrific my friend.
Your pics are all so lovely. I do not have a camera yet, thinking about whether to buy or not. Now using my mobile phone camera only.
Tanna, your photographs are wonderful! Last year for my birthday my husband bought me a pricy Nikon D5300 with a Tamron lens. I am such an amateur!! I just have never grasped the workings of a camera, but I do want to learn. I wish I could find a class like the one you took. Those I have tried have been OVER my head!! I look forward to seeing more of your work. AWESOME!
So great that you got to take that photography class. My hubby takes classes online --and he's a pro when it comes to great water pictures... I do some of the 'fancy' water stuff --but usually just leave that up to my sweetie...
Great photos. We've been out hiking this week and searching for waterfalls. Had a wonderful time.
Hugs,
Betsy
these are great shots!! i want to take a beginner photog course...one of these days!
Yes, the practice is key, isn't it? I need to dust my camera off and see if I can't do a little practicing myself. Your shots look great - I may need your assistance. ;-)
I wish I could have joined you, Tanna! I love my new camera to bits but so far I'm being such a coward and spending most of the time in auto settings. I must do better!

Beautiful! I avoid the manual setting like the plague! I've never understood it well but it sounds like this class made it easy! Or easier ...
Beautiful photography - sounds like a great class!
Hugs,
Jemma
what a fun class and you seem to have it all under the belt. Look at you talking technical stuff :) love the water photos :)
I rarely use manual as I was told it requires using a tripod and I dislike carrying around a tripod--but your photos have shown me that isn't always true! I'd love to take classes one day--maybe when my babysitting days are completed?
